EmbraceAbility Launches New Project in Malawi

Expanding Our Work into Phalombe, Malawi.

EmbraceAbility is excited to announce that we will now be expanding projects to Phalombe, Malawi. From November onwards, we will launch two new programmes Disaster Relief Programme and the Inclusive Education Programme.

Tropical Storm Ana left a trail of destruction in Malawi, particularly in the hardest-hit southern districts, after it struck the country in late January. Over six months later, lives and homes are still destroyed, leaving thousands homeless. The Disaster Relief programme, run in partnership with a public health graduate team, will provide aid to 400 households. We aim to restore disabled households with shelter, food and resources to revive their communities.

Over 52% of People Live in Poverty

Currently, 52% of all people live in poverty, and 1 in 5 have a disability. Most children with disabilities drop out of school due to stigma and discrimination on a daily basis. Research from Malawi has documented that people with disabilities and their families have poorer living conditions than people without disabilities. All the families EmbraceAbility plans to work within the next few months live in extreme poverty.

Inclusive Education for All

The Inclusive Education programme will focus on improving access to education for disabled households who may not be able to afford school fees and materials. EmbraceAbility predominantly supports single-female-headed families that may have been abandoned or left due to the stigma attached to having a child with a disability.

Alternative Solutions and Fundraising

Mothers report working 8 hours daily, pushing their children to school on a bicycle, and heading home to do a full day’s work farming and caring for their other children. The team is working with schools and the village chiefs to find alternative solutions such as nearby housing to ease the pressure on households.

In the upcoming months, we will launch fundraising activities to raise the £30,000 required to reach 400 families with access to basic necessities such as shelter, food and water. We would love for our supporters to get involved by hosting fundraising events.

If you are interested in getting involved, please look at our exciting volunteer opportunities or email hello@embraceability.org.uk to find out more.
